STATEMENT: Submission Of Signatures For Statewide Ballot “affordable Housing Freeze” Measure By Michael Weinstein

from Californians for Responsible Housing:

“This ballot measure will pour gasoline on the fire of California’s affordable housing crisis. It will do exactly the opposite of what it promises – instead of helping
Californians, it will result in an affordable housing freeze and higher costs,” said Tom Bannon, CEO of the California Apartment Association.

“This measure also allows cities and towns to roll back protections for the most vulnerable Californians. By making construction of affordable housing more difficult, this measure could hurt veterans, the elderly and low-income families – the people who need the most help with finding affordable housing.”

“Housing experts know the policies in this measure will freeze construction of new, affordable and middle-class housing, including single family homes. Independent academic experts from Stanford and UC Berkeley agree these policies will reduce the construction and availability of affordable housing, which will drive up rents for many Californians – this is the real agenda of the proponent of this measure, Michael Weinstein. He has also funneled more than $2 million into qualifying it for the ballot.”

“Finally, the state’s nonpartisan Legislative Analyst’s Office has said it will reduce the value of rental properties and single-family homes, driving down local property tax revenues by up to hundreds of millions of dollars per year – and reducing the funding available for vital services like schools, public safety, road repairs, education, and fire safety.”
